Free Apitherapy Workshop Today, 8/27/16, at Noon!

Don’t miss an exciting opportunity today to learn more about the benefits of natural beekeeping with Heather Wood’s free Apitherapy workshop at noon! Bees are an important part of our ecosystem and natural beekeeping is a great way to protect the wild strains of our precious pollinators. Learn all about the added benefits of beekeeping with samples of fresh honey from Olymaw, Chocolate from HoneyLove, and propolis from local bee expert Benjamin Pixie.

Recently our wild hive at West Central Park has come under attack by local wasps and yellow jackets. These predators are hungry and thirsty at this time of year and don’t hesitate to snatch the defenseless honey bees and their honey. In order to protect the swarm, wasp/yellow jacket/hornet traps have been placed around the perimeter and in one day have trapped over 25 wasps. Normally at the Park we live and let live, but when one species tries to wipe out another, we take action. The traps are based on vinegar and wasp pheromone and dish soap and do not use any harsh chemicals.

Along with the West Oly Farmers’ Market on Tuesday afternoons from 4-7, WCP hosts two great food trucks, Rosie’s Joint and OlyGo Juice weekdays from 11-6. The Park is a centrally located spot to meet friends for lunch and to get your weekly shopping done!

This coming Monday is the last of the 2016 Monday Movie Madness series with the beloved film, E.T. The movie will air at dusk and there will be, as always, fresh popcorn and hot tea available. Thanks to all these local businesses for supporting this summer series! Kudos to: Oly Fed, WSECU, Altis Construction, Phoebe’s Pastry Cafe, Iron Rabbit, Cooper Point Public House, Jeff Snyder Architect, Rosie’s Joint and Olybuilt Contracting!

And of course, don’t forget the one reason that this little corner oasis is kept looking so nice and that is our weekly Sunday Work Party. The Work Party runs from 10-2, every Sunday in the summer and is the Park’s ‘motor’ for getting maintenance, small repairs and construction projects accomplished. The more volunteers we have, the more we get done! We take your volunteer time seriously and report your work hours to IRS every year as an in kind donation, as well we make sure you have a job to do that you can manage and enjoy. This Park is for you Olympia, come be a part of making it yours.
