My time volunteering at the West Central Park
By Kaylee Spitzer
Growing up in Olympia my whole life, I always passed the little dinky blank dirty space that was on the corner of Harrison and Division. I walked through it many times, hung out there a few times. It was always just a random area that had nothing to it. When they started doing construction and clearing out that area, I wondered what they were going to put. Another gas station? A house? A coffee shop? Who knew? With all the modern day buildings and such that keep popping up everywhere, who woulda thought it would be a amazing and beautiful park!
The West Central Park Project is probably one of the best things I have been a part of. This park is full of all kinds of different plants and trees. Flowers. Foods. There is an event space for any events, bands or get-togethers. It’s a beautiful thing to be a part of. Over the past few years I’ve volunteered quite a few times. It’s very rewarding knowing I am giving back to the community and helping out such a beautiful place to stay beautiful and put together. Not just for looks, but for people walking or driving by. For people with kids who want to go play at the park for a while. For fun small town Olympia events with bands and food and fundraisers.
Maintaining the beauty of the park feels good in so many ways. I feels amazing to get out into nature, the fresh air, and just become one with life for a few hours. Every Sunday for about 2-3 hours I am there in that park, making sure everything is taken care of and kept maintained and beautiful. The experiences I’ve had there with the staff has been wonderful. And thanks to the volunteer work I’ve done, I’ve developed quite the green thumb! I now proudly have 50+ house plants and a small garden outside my house.
If you haven’t volunteered there before, try it. It’s amazing. It’s fresh air. It’s rewarding. It’s beautiful. Give back to the community and try it.

Gardening not your thing? That’s ok! We have lots of other volunteer opportunities!
